Aspiring Member of Parliament for Rongai Constituency, Nakuru County Mercy Chebet Chelel has demanded an apology from her opponent Tonny Kipkurui Wendot after telling her to undergo circumcision before seeking an elective post in 2027.
Chelel has given Wendot seven days to tender an apology in the nature, verve and enthusiasm with which he defamed and derogated her name.
Through lawyer Danstan Omari, Chelel is also seeking Sh 50,000 compensation for reputational and career dent occasioned by the remarks.
Wendot, a Kenya Revenue Authority employee currently stationed in Mombasa, will face legal charges should he fail to honour the above demands.
“Should you fail to strictly abide by the demands of our client within the stipulated timelines, we shall, without haste, move to press legal charges against you, in a bid to restitute our client’s dented leadership and political reputation, all at your expense and without any further reference to you, whatsoever,” Omari said.
In the letter, Wendot was informed that in his service to the country as a senior employee of KRA and working in senior civil servant roles, this behavior is sharply in contravention to your seniority in civil service.
“Moreover, as an aspiring member of parliament, your demeaning statements are extremely insensitive and disparaging, in the wake of increased cases of femicide,” Omari added.
Wendot is accused that on 24th May 2026, while attending a fundraising harambee in Menengai West Ward, within Rongai Constituency, he fragrantly, recklessly and condescendingly made statements in the local Kalenjin dialect; “…otorchin tumin korog, amun achinii luget…” which words have since been translated to to mean you were inciting the crowd to have Mercy Chelel taken through female genital mutilation before she can face him off in the parliamentary contest, otherwise he would cause havoc.
