Kenya Defense Forces Captain Edwin Muthomi Kaunga who is accused of killing his wife has been barred by a Nakuru court from threatening or tormenting the family of his late wife.
Senior Principal Magistrate Adet Vincent Omollo also ordered the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Nakuru Police Station, to oversee and ensure compliance with and enforcement of the interim orders.
“Pending the hearing and determination of this application, an interim protection order be and is hereby issued restraining the respondent, either by himself or through his agents, servants, and/or proxies, from harassing, tormenting, intimidating and/or threatening the applicant and her family.
The case was filed by Serah Nyokabi Mugweru, the sister to the deceased, after Kaunga started calling them from prison with threats and intimidation.
Kaunga made headlines in April 2026 after allegedly stabbing his wife Ann Mugweru to death in their home at St Mary’s Estate in Nakuru.
The accused person is alleged to have committed the offense on 14th April 2026 in front of their four year old child.
The court heard that upon been taken into custody, Kaunga started threatening, harassing, intimidating and tormenting the applicant and her family throu phone calls.
It is alleged that the said phone number has reached out to various members of the Mugweru family threatening that he would come for their child.
“The same was said in a threatening tone and in light of the accusations against the respondent, the family is apprehensive that he is likely to harm the minor,” the sister said in her affidavit.
The court heard that whilst the family is not certain of who the phone number belongs to, the caller only identifies himself as Edwin, the respondent herein.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is also an interested party in the case in support of the family of the deceased and the minor.
Sonko said he is an interest party in the case because it attracts the public as the deceased was brutally murdered in front of the minor.
Kaunga is currently committed to the Mathari Psychiatric Hospital in Nairobi after the medical report indicated that he was unfit to stand trial.
The Psychiatric report from Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital indicated that Kaunga suffers from bipolar mood disorder 1 and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder with psychosis.
According to the report, Kaunga had once been admitted and treated in various hospitals including Forces Memorial Hospital in Nairobi and Regional Army Hospital, Lanet for PTSD.
Kaunga is said to have started exhibiting strange behavior and violence after his deployment to Somalia and Congo respectively between the year 2019 and 2025.
However, the family of the deceased said they were dissatisfied with the psychiatric report.
Elizabeth Ochieng, the family lawyer, said they seek to engage a private psychiatrist to assess Kaunga’s mental state and file the report in court for consideration.
The case will be heard inter-partes on 17th July 2026.
