Man suspected of killing girlfriend in the UK in court after arrest in Nairobi

A Kenyan man wanted in the United Kingdom for the murder of his girlfriend has been arraigned before a Nairobi court after he was arrested at the Kenya-Tanzania border.

Brian Kiprop Kiplagat was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts before Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutai where the prosecution made an application to have him detained for 21 days pending conclusion of investigations and extradition process.

According to an affidavit by Police Constable Kennedy Bett, the suspect is a flight risk since he has no permanent place of abode and was arrested at the Namanga border point leaving Kenya.

PC Bett also stated that his team needs time to conclude investigations including subjecting the suspect’s phone and any other gadgets to forensic analysis.

“It is in the interest of justice that the respondent remains in custody until the conclusion of investigations,” PC Bett said.

The court heard that Kiplagat and the deceased, Maryanne Nduta were living together untill the January 2025 incident, after which he fled to Kenya.

The court heard that after committing the offense, the suspect texted one of the deceased relatives alleging a misfortune upon the deceased.

“It is believed that the suspect still has the phone through which he texted the said relative, from which information may be forensically extracted,” the officer added.

The United Kingdom, under the Metropolitan Police Service requested for information, assistance and arrest of the suspect whom they suspected had entered the Kenyan borders.

Kiplagat was arrested on 10th June 2026 at Namanga by the immigration officers heading to Tanzania using a temporary permit which was issued the same day.

The investigators want to establish how he managed to secure more than one travel document even after the commission of the offense.

The suspect will be back in court on 15th June for his lawyers to cross-examine the investigating officer.
