The Kibera High Court judge handling the trial of eight Utumishi Girls suspected to have started a dormitory fire that killed 16 students has barred the minors from accessing television or social media while in custody.
Justice Diana Kavedza made the order after concerns were raised over online harassment and bullying resulting in the minors suffering from trauma and anxiety.
The judge ordered the children’s officer to investigate the bullying and the students to receive counseling for the next months.
Their parents were also directed to provide them with essential personal effects.
While cautioning against sensational reporting and external influence of the case, the judge noted that court must guard against trial by media, public pressure, sensitive concerns and premature conclusions.
The subject minors denied murder charges stemming from the said fire on the night of 27th and 28th June 2026, at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
The matter will be mentioned on 22nd September when the court is expected to deliver the ruling on bail application.
