Garissa cop denies manslaughter charges in taxi driver death

A police officer accused of fatally shooting a taxi driver in Garissa County will remail in custody for one week pending a ruling on his release on bail.

Police Constable Charles Ngulungu Kauwi is accused of unlawfully causing the death of Adan Mohamed Hassan on 21st April 2026 within Modika area of Garissa.

Kauwi denied the manslaughter charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo.

The DPP opposed his release on bail on grounds that he is a flight risk and might interfere with witnesses.

The family of the deceased also questioned why the officer was charged with manslaughter instead of murder.

According to the victim’s family lawyer, Mahat Somane, they intend to challenge the manslaughter charge preferred on grounds that the circumstances surrounding his killing warrant a murder charge.

The ruling on his release on bail/bond will be delivered on 29th May 2026
