Two people accused of impersonating Interior PS Raymond Omollo will be detained for a further three days to allow police to complete investigations.
Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego allowed Dennis Kipchumba and Pikei Winstone Gilbert to remain in custody after the investigating officer told the court that he had not managed to get the PS to record a statement the four days the suspects have been in custody.
According to the miscellaneous application, PS Omollo allegedly received calls in October 2024 from members of the public inquiring whether he was the one who had created a WhatsApp group which had his profile picture and contact No. 0722-671 349.
Corporal Evans Onsomo told the court that the PS requested for the screen shots of the page and upon close check, he discovered that the group had communication with the person behind it requesting for some token so that he could facilitate them secure some government jobs.
“He forwarded the same information to the Director Directorate of Criminal Investigations so that it could be investigated and whoever was behind the same could be brought to book. He shared the message to his social media platforms so that members of the public could be aware of the con men,” officer Onsomo said
The court heard that upon sharing the message, the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government PS received many comments, whereby most of them were stating that they had already lost some cash to the scammer.
So far two suspects were arrested on 2nd November at Subaru field in the outcast Eldoret two and being in the sense that it was on a weekend and many exhibits couldn’t be recovered.
“The suspects could have been released on cash bail or police bond but they are flight risk being in the sense that it has taken a joint operation of a week to smoke out the suspect from their hideout and during arrest , they tried to escape using motorcycle,” the investigator added.
Kipchumba and Gilbert were later traced to the outskirts of Eldoret town where they were arrested.
The magistrate told the police that the case will have a final mention on 11th November 2024 after which she will make her decision regarding the matter.
